What's actually happening in your Body when you're Stressed!
Sep 23, 2026
You know the feeling. Jaw tight before you've even opened your laptop. Shoulders up around your ears by 9am. A wired, can't-quite-switch-off feeling that coffee doesn't touch - and doesn't leave even when the kids are finally asleep.
If you've been waiting for things to "calm down" before you deal with it, here's the honest truth: for most of us, busy is the baseline now. Work, kids, the mental load of running a household - it doesn't pause. So the goal isn't finding a stress-free life. It's building a nervous system that can move through the busy, instead of getting stuck in it.
What stress actually is, in plain English
Your nervous system runs on two settings:
- Sympathetic — fight or flight. Alert, reactive, ready for action.
- Parasympathetic — rest and recover. Calm, digesting, repairing.
A healthy nervous system moves between the two easily — switching on when it needs to, switching off just as easily afterward. Stress, in the way most of us experience it day to day, is what happens when we get stuck in "on" — even when there's no actual emergency happening.
Three signs your nervous system might be stuck in fight-or-flight
- You feel tired but wired. Exhausted, but your brain won't switch off at night.
- Small things feel bigger than they should. A dropped cup or a slow tram feels disproportionately overwhelming.
- Your body holds tension you didn't consciously create. Tight jaw, shoulders, or shallow breathing you only notice when someone points it out.
None of this means something is wrong with you. It means your body has been running in a particular pattern for a while - and patterns can shift.
Why this matters more than "just relaxing more"
Telling a busy mum/dad to "just relax" isn't useful advice - it's not realistic, and it's not really the point. The nervous system doesn't need less life. It needs support to move through the life it already has more easily.
That's the lens we take at Nervana. We're not here to tell you to slow down your whole world. We're here to help your body get better at handling the pace it's already at.
Over the next few weeks, we're unpacking this properly - the hidden signs your recovery isn't working, why resilience is a capacity rather than a personality trait, and a simple way to actually measure what's going on inside your nervous system, rather than guessing.
If any of this sounds familiar, we'd love to have a chat next time you're in the clinic - no pressure, just a conversation about what's actually going on for you.
