The Hidden Signs Your Recovery Isn't Working
Sep 30, 2026
Last week we talked about what's actually happening in your body when you're stressed - the fight-or-flight vs rest-and-recover thing. This week, let's get specific: how do you actually know if your recovery isn't working?
Because here's the thing - it rarely shows up as one big, obvious moment. It shows up as a slow accumulation of small signs that become your new normal, until one day you realise you can't remember the last time you felt properly rested.
The signs worth paying attention to:
- You wake up feeling like you didn't sleep, even after eight hours
- Your body feels stiff or heavy for no clear reason
- You crash hard mid-afternoon, every afternoon
- Workouts leave you more drained than energised
- You can't focus for more than 10–15 minutes at a stretch
- Small things - a dropped cup, a slow queue - feel disproportionately overwhelming
- You feel flat or disconnected, like you're running on autopilot
If a few of these sound familiar, it's not a personal failing. It's not "just getting older" or "just being a busy mum." It's a sign your body doesn't have the bandwidth it needs to properly reset.
Why this happens even when you're "doing everything right"
This is the part that catches people out - you can sleep eight hours and still wake up foggy, because sleep and recovery aren't the same thing. If your nervous system doesn't fully shift out of "on" mode, your body doesn't get the chance to actually repair, even during sleep.
And here's the honest bit: these signs show up because life doesn't stop for you to recover. You don't get a blank week to reset in. Recovery has to happen inside the busyness - in the pockets, not instead of it.
What actually helps
Not more willpower. Not another supplement. What helps is creating small, repeatable conditions that let your parasympathetic system - the rest-and-recover side - actually switch on. That might be gentle movement, breathwork, better morning habits (more on that in a couple of weeks), or supportive care that helps take some of the load off your nervous system.
If two or three of the signs above sound like your normal, it might be worth a conversation. We're not here to add another thing to your list - we're here to help your body get some of that bandwidth back.
